Local Entrepreneur Bob Kahn Shares his Story in Community Conversations: Finding your Way After a Life-Limiting Diagnosis
(Charlottesville, VA, May 24, 2021) – When Bob Kahn, a successful local entrepreneur and commercial real estate broker, was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in December 2020, he did not view his life-limiting diagnosis as a death sentence. Quite the opposite: he turned away from fear and embraced the idea of living each day to the fullest. On June 22 at 1 p.m., Mr. Kahn will join staff from Hospice of the Piedmont to share his story in the virtual event Community Conversations: Finding Your Way after a Life-Limiting Diagnosis.
During this one-hour live online event, Mr. Kahn will be joined by Hospice of the Piedmont’s Chief Medical Officer Tim Short, M.D., HMDC, FAAFP, FAAHPM, and his palliative care nurse practitioner Ashleigh Bergstrom, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, in an honest and brave conversation about his life-affirming path after receiving a terminal diagnosis. Mr. Kahn is currently being treated at the UVA Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, under the care of Dr. Matthew Reilley, and is also receiving palliative care through the Piedmont Care program for advanced illness (a program offered by Hospice of the Piedmont). During this event, he will share steps in treatment after his diagnosis, his hopes for the future, and how he is measuring quality of life each and every day.
“I understand this is a terminal illness, but I don’t actually focus on that,” Mr. Kahn said. “I want to live my life to the fullest… this is my legacy.” Mr. Kahn goes on to explain that, while he does not fear death, he does fear being in a hospital, losing his independence, and making frequent visits to the emergency room. For those reasons, he has chosen home-based care with Piedmont Care that allows him to savor relationships and spend time with those he loves, continue to be independent, and even build travel back into his life—an activity he’s always loved—now that his symptoms are under control.
During the virtual event on June 22, viewers will sit in on a conversation with Bob and members of his care team. Viewers will then have the chance to submit questions to a panel that will include Mr. Kahn, Dr. Short, Ashleigh Bergstrom, and Dr. Michael Dobson, a Hospice & Palliative medicine Fellow.
The live virtual event will also be recorded and available for viewing after June 22. This event is free and open to the public. For online registration and more information, visit www.hopva.org/community-conversations.
