The Story of the Studio:
By opening Studio 22 Salon & Spa, Wanda Payne- Banks is following a dream that began three decades ago. Although she wanted to be a professional hair stylist since she was 17, her life took some unexpected turns. Wanda was a young mother and later had to face challenges that accompanied her daughters Lauren’s diagnosis with Rett Syndrome, a progressive neurological disorder which has no cure. For years, Wanda’s life revolved around Lauren and her day-to-day needs, including frequent medical appointments.
Shortly after Lauren passed away at age 15, Wanda felt she needed to take her life in a new direction and decided to pursue her dream. She attended Paul Mitchell to earn her cosmetology certification and spent years perfecting her craft at a local salon. Despite multiple opportunities to work in other salons in Northern Virginia, Wanda decided to open her own business locally so that she can be more involved in the community. For Wanda, this step in her life’s journey not only allows her to do what she loves, it’s also a tribute to her daughter. Studio 22 Salon and Spa's logo includes a crown, which represents Lauren whom she describes as her princess. The dominant color is purple, which represents Rett Syndrome. And the number 22 signifies the day of the month in which Lauren was both born and died.
