As of 2025, federal tax credits are available for homeowners who install qualifying, high-efficiency air conditioning and heat pump systems under the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit.

These credits were enhanced by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 but are now scheduled to expire after December 31, 2025, due to recent legislative changes.

How to claim the tax credits

  1. Confirm eligibility. Contact Able Heating & Air to review the specific equipment options that meet the 2025 efficiency standards.
  2. Get a Qualified Manufacturer Identification Number (QMID). For equipment installed in 2025, be sure to ask Able Heating & Air for the QMID number from the manufacturer to include on your tax return.
  3. File IRS Form 5695. When you file your federal income taxes for 2025, you must include Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits.

Important limitations

  • The credits are nonrefundable, which means they can reduce your tax liability to zero, but you cannot receive a refund for any excess credit.
  • The credits can be claimed annually for eligible improvements made in that year, up until the program's expiration at the end of 2025.
  • For the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, the equipment must be for your principal residence, but renters who make eligible improvements can claim the credit. Some credits may also apply to a second home.
